Retail vs institutional traders
A retail trader generally trades as an individual client, while an institutional trader acts within a bank, fund or other organization. Objectives, access, financing and obligations differ. Institutions may use their own or clients' capital; these labels do not replace the legal classification of retail and professional clients.
Illustrative example
How does it work in practice?
Suppose two parties buy 10,000 EUR: an individual speculates, while a company employee pays a foreign invoice. The same amount does not imply the same purpose, market access or legal client classification.
