Bank of England (BoE)

The Bank of England (BoE) is the UK's central bank. Its Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) sets Bank Rate and other monetary-policy measures. Decisions, voting and explanations can affect sterling; a rate change alone does not determine GBP's direction.

Illustrative example

How does it work in practice?

Suppose the MPC leaves Bank Rate at 4%, with votes split between holding and cutting. The decision is not a cut; the voting pattern shows differences of opinion within the committee.

A case to work through

Majority and minority

In a fictional MPC vote, five members favour holding Bank Rate and four favour a cut.

  1. Check the formally announced Bank Rate.
  2. Record each option's vote count separately.

What follows? Treat the minority proposal as a view rather than the applicable rate.

Example boundary: This is not a current vote or a prediction of the next decision.

A useful distinction

Bank of England (BoE) / Central Bank Meeting Minutes

The BoE sets UK monetary policy; minutes document a meeting's discussion and reasoning.

Check your understanding

Read the decision separately from MPC members' preferences.

Does a minority proposal change the announced rate?

Show the answer and explanation

No, the formal decision applies

Votes explain views rather than several simultaneous policy rates.
