Ichimoku Kinko Hyo — Japanese trading system

Risk warning · YMYL This article is for educational purposes only and is not investment advice. Trading on the Forex market involves a high risk of capital loss — ESMA reports 74–89% of retail accounts lose money.

Trader opens EUR/USD chart with Ichimoku — sees 5 lines and colored cloud. "Chaos!". Meanwhile Japanese traders use it since 1968 as complete system. Here\'s how to read Ichimoku step by step.

Ichimoku history

Ichimoku Kinko Hyo (一目均衡表) = Japanese "one-glance equilibrium chart". Created by Goichi Hosoda (pen name Ichimoku Sanjin) in 1968 after 30 years of research. Philosophy: one glance shows everything — trend, momentum, support/resistance, sentiment. Hence 5 lines and Kumo (cloud).

5 components

Ichimoku components
Tenkan-sen9-period midpoint, fast trend (like EMA9)
Kijun-sen26-period midpoint, slow trend (like EMA26)
Senkou Span A(Tenkan + Kijun) / 2, shifted 26 forward
Senkou Span B52-period midpoint, shifted 26 forward
Chikou spancurrent close, shifted 26 backward

Senkou A + B form Kumo (cloud) — most important Ichimoku element.

Kumo — key element

Kumo is shifted 26 periods forward — shows future support/resistance. Thick Kumo = strong. Thin = weak.

Rules:

  • Price above Kumo = bullish trend (trade long)
  • Price below Kumo = bearish trend (trade short)
  • Price inside Kumo = consolidation (DON\'T trade)
  • Green Kumo = bullish bias
  • Red Kumo = bearish bias

Triple confirmation setup

Strongest bullish Ichimoku setup:

  1. Price above Kumo
  2. Kumo green (Senkou A > Senkou B)
  3. Tenkan-sen above Kijun-sen
  4. Chikou span above price 26 periods ago

4× confirmed = strong bullish. Retail win rate: 65-70% with price action confirmation.

Practical setups

Kumo breakout

Price breaks out of Kumo with large body candle = strong reversal/continuation. Win rate: 60-65%.

Bounce off Kumo

In trend price pullbacks to Kumo (top edge for uptrend, bottom for downtrend) and bounces. Entry signal setup. Win rate: 55-60%.

TK Cross

Tenkan crosses Kijun = momentum signal. Bullish above Kumo. Bearish below. Lower win rate (50-55%) without additional confirmation.

For beginners — simplified Ichimoku

5 lines = chaos for beginners. Recommendation: only Kumo + price for 3 months. After mastering:

  1. Months 1-3: Only Kumo
  2. Months 4-6: + Tenkan-sen + Kijun-sen
  3. Month 7+: + Chikou span (full Ichimoku)

Best pairs and timeframes

  • Best pairs: USD/JPY, EUR/JPY, GBP/JPY (Japanese crosses — native for Ichimoku)
  • Timeframe: D1 and W1 (Ichimoku is for swing/position trader)
  • Avoid: M5/M15 (too much noise for Ichimoku)

Ichimoku is powerful but requires learning. After mastering gives complete system in one tool. Top Japanese traders use only Ichimoku — without RSI, MACD, MA. For advanced retail traders after year with simpler indicators.

Frequently asked

What is Kumo (cloud)?

Kumo = space between Senkou Span A and Senkou Span B. Color: green if Senkou A > Senkou B (bullish), red if reverse (bearish). Price above Kumo = bullish trend (trade long). Price below Kumo = bearish trend (trade short). Price inside Kumo = consolidation / indecision (don't trade). Plus: Kumo is shifted 26 periods forward — shows future. Thick Kumo = strong support/resistance, thin = weak.

What are all 5 Ichimoku lines?

(1) Tenkan-sen (9-period midpoint of last 9 high/low) — fast trend, like EMA9. (2) Kijun-sen (26-period midpoint) — slow trend, like EMA26. (3) Senkou Span A = (Tenkan + Kijun) / 2, shifted 26 forward. (4) Senkou Span B = (52-period midpoint), shifted 26 forward. Senkou A + B form Kumo. (5) Chikou span = current close, shifted 26 backward — momentum confirmation. Together 5 lines give complete picture of trend, momentum, support/resistance.

Strongest Ichimoku setups?

Top 3: (1) Triple confirmation: price above Kumo + Tenkan above Kijun + Chikou span above price = strong bullish (4× confirmed). (2) Kumo breakout: price breaks out of Kumo with large body candle = strong reversal/continuation. (3) Bounce off Kumo: in trend price pullbacks to Kumo and bounces = entry signal. Strongest setup = all 3 together. Win rate: triple confirmation 65-70%, single signal 50-55%.

Why is Ichimoku complicated?

5 lines = lots of info. Beginner sees "chaos". Plus: numbers (9, 26, 52) come from Japanese weeks (1 week = 6 days × 4 weeks = 24, plus extras). Don't fit Western 5-day week. For beginners I recommend: only Kumo + price. Ignore Tenkan, Kijun, Chikou for 3 months. After mastering Kumo, add Tenkan/Kijun. After 6 months: Chikou. Step by step, not all at once.
