Trading Discipline
Trading discipline is the consistent application of predefined entry, position-size, exit and trading-break rules. It helps evaluate the process separately from individual outcomes. Following rules does not ensure profitability: the plan itself also needs testing and periodic assessment.
Illustrative example
How does it work in practice?
Suppose a plan allows two trades per day. After two losses, another signal appears, but the trader records it in the journal and ends the session under the existing rule instead of raising the limit in frustration.
A case to work through
A profitable deviation
In a fictional journal, a winner skips confirmation while a loser meets that requirement.
- Compare each decision with the entry condition.
- Mark a skipped rule even when the trade profits.
What follows? Separate execution quality from strategy profitability.
Example boundary: Consistent execution does not prove a rule is profitable.
Assess the decision process
Text description of the diagram
- Rule: Record the entry condition before deciding.
- Execution: Check whether the condition was actually met.
- Assessment: Separate compliance from profit or loss.
