Prop firm (proprietary trading firm)
A prop firm (proprietary trading firm) gives a trader access to the firm's capital in exchange for a profit split — usually after passing a paid challenge that tests discipline and risk management. The trader risks only the evaluation fee, not personal funds, but must respect strict drawdown limits and payout rules. Models vary (live-market vs. demo/simulated accounts), so the decisive question is whether the firm actually pays out.
