Monetary Policy
Central bank actions, including interest rate decisions, used to pursue its mandate. Effects on financing conditions and prices pass through several transmission channels.
Illustrative example
How does it work in practice?
Suppose a fictional central bank raises its rate from 3% to 3.5%, an increase of 0.5 percentage points. The decision can affect financing and expectations; the rate change alone does not determine the currency's direction.
A case to work through
Tool and later observation
In a fictional account, a bank changes its rate and a price release appears a month later.
- Label the decision an action and the release a separate observation.
- Do not attribute the entire price change to that decision without further analysis.
What follows? Separate transmission mechanisms from a certain forecast.
Example boundary: Other events also affect the economy.
