Gartley Pattern

Gartley is an XABCD harmonic structure with B at a 61.8% XA retracement and D at a 78.6% XA retracement. Remaining legs must fit the chosen ratios, including AB=CD relationships. In a bullish version, an upward reaction from D would align with the original XA direction.

Illustrative example

How does it work in practice?

Assume X is 100 and A is 110: B lies at 103.82 and D at 102.14. A possible rise from D would align with the initial XA move; other legs still require validation.

A case to work through

Two XA percentages

Hypothetically, X=30 and A=50, so XA spans 20.

  1. B at 61.8% is 50−12.36=37.64.
  2. D at 78.6% is 50−15.72=34.28.

What follows? Record B and D without swapping their percentages.

Example boundary: Two levels are insufficient to validate the full XABCD structure.

A useful distinction

Gartley Pattern / Bat Pattern

Gartley has B at 61.8% and D at 78.6%; Bat uses a shallower B and D at 88.6%.

Check your understanding

Locate two different retracement levels of the same leg.

Hypothetically, X=100 and A=120. Where is B at a 61.8% XA retracement?

Show the answer and explanation

107.64

120−0.618×20=107.64.
