Bank of Japan (BoJ)

The Bank of Japan (BoJ) is Japan's central bank. Its Policy Board decides monetary policy, and the bank publishes the Tankan business survey. For JPY, check current instruments and guidance; earlier negative-rate or yield-curve-control policies do not automatically describe today's framework.

Illustrative example

How does it work in practice?

In a fictional announcement, the BoJ changes its money-market operating guideline after an earlier Tankan release. A trader separates the policy decision from the business survey and checks the two documents individually.

A case to work through

Sorting publications

A fictional folder contains a policy statement, an outlook report and Tankan results.

  1. Check each document's title and date.
  2. Separate the formal decision from forecasts and firms' responses.

What follows? Cite the document that answers the particular question.

Example boundary: Neither a survey nor a projection independently sets a new policy rate.

A useful distinction
