Swing Low

A swing low is a local minimum selected through comparisons with candles or moves on both sides. When right-hand candles are required, confirmation is delayed. Parameters and equal-low tolerance affect detection; a single higher low does not by itself establish an entire trend.

Illustrative example

How does it work in practice?

Assume five candle lows are 105, 103, 100, 102 and 104. A two-bars-on-each-side rule confirms the low at 100 only after the fifth candle; earlier it was merely a candidate.

A case to work through

A lower low during confirmation

A hypothetical candidate on bar 20 has low=50; two right-hand bars must have higher lows.

  1. Bar 21 has low=52 but bar 22 has low=49.
  2. The second right-hand bar is below 50, so the candidate fails the rule.

What follows? Do not use low=50 as a confirmed pivot under this method.

Example boundary: Equal-low tolerance needs its own rule; wider windows change pivot selection.

A useful distinction

Swing Low / Swing High

Swing low selects a minimum; swing high selects a maximum using a specified comparison count.

Check your understanding

Reject a candidate violated before its confirmation window ends.

A low=30 candidate needs two higher right-hand lows; they are 31 and 32. What about this condition?

Show the answer and explanation

It is satisfied after the second bar closes

Both right-hand lows exceed 30.
