New York Session

The New York session is a conventional window of US participants’ FX activity, rather than the stock exchange’s opening hours. US releases and the London overlap can affect trading conditions. UTC and other local times depend on the date and daylight-saving changes in the relevant countries.

Illustrative example

How does it work in practice?

Suppose an event occurs at 08:30 in New York. That is 13:30 UTC under EST or 12:30 UTC under EDT. Before comparing charts, a trader checks the date and zone rather than using one fixed time.

A case to work through

Two chart time zones

A fictional event is at 08:30 New York under assumed UTC−4; the chart uses UTC+1.

  1. Add four hours to get 12:30 UTC.
  2. Add one hour for 13:30 chart time.

What follows? Use offsets applicable to the event date.

Example boundary: These are not universal session hours or fixed annual offsets.

A useful distinction

New York Session / Session Overlap

Overlap is the shared part of activity windows; New York is one such window.

Check your understanding

Convert an event time using specified offsets.

08:30 at UTC−5 on a UTC+2 chart becomes:

15:30

Add five hours, then two.
