ifo Business Climate Index (Germany)
A monthly index combining German firms' current business assessments and six-month expectations. Survey balances are transformed and normalized; published index points are not a percentage change in production.
Illustrative example
How does it work in practice?
Assume two hypothetical comparable, already normalized ifo Business Climate readings are 100 and 102 points, with the same base and data vintage. The rise is 2 index points, not evidence that German firms' output increased by 2%.
A case to work through
Balance first
In a fictional ifo group, 30% judge conditions good, 20% poor and 50% neutral.
- The situation balance is 30 − 20 = +10 percentage points.
- A published index requires further methodological stages, including normalization.
What follows? Label the result a response balance.
Example boundary: It is not the complete ifo reading or output growth.
A useful distinction
ifo Business Climate Index (Germany) / Tankan Survey (BoJ Business Sentiment)
